Workshop

An half day workshop on the afternoon of 2 December 2008 will aim to encourage the integration of failure case studies into education and training. The workshop focuses on undergraduate curricula for civil engineering and engineering mechanics. The workshop will provide resource materials for engineering educators who understand that lessons learned from engineering failures could be an integral component of professional engineering education. The materials could also be used as post graduate training resources.

The workshop programme will include:

  • The use of case studies in professional engineering education
  • Sources for case study materials
  • Selected engineering mechanics cases (illustrating principles of statics, dynamics and mechanics of materials)
  • Selected structural engineering cases (analysis and design examples)
  • Selected cases for other civil engineering courses (soil mechanics, geotechnical engineering, fluid mechanics, hydraulics and engineering materials courses)
  • Ethics and professional issues
  • Forensic engineering and design courses

Each participant will be given a CD-ROM with workshop presentations and other electronic materials for classroom use and a copy of a book containing relevant forensic engineering case histories.

The workshop will be introduced by Brian Neale, Chair of the conference Organising Committee, and led by Ken Carper, Paul Bosela and Norbert Delatte. Ken, Paul and Norbert have completed successful workshop sessions throughout the United States on behalf of the Committee of Education of the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE), and their Technical Council on Forensic Engineering.
